Special Projects

Hospital Project

The hospital project was initiated in 2006 as an edutainment program for hospitalized children. A pilot project was initiated at The Mater Hospital. In 2007 the project increased its scope to include Kenyatta National Hospital and Mbagathi District Hospital to date. The main goals and objectives of the project are to contribute towards a positive awareness of illness and ensure a meaningful stay in hospital.
The following are activities are carried out during each visit:

  • Entertainment Activities: which include singing, dancing, drama, clowning, puppetry and magic.
  • Creative Activities: arts, like painting/ drawing and crafts and making toys.
  • Educative Activities: storytelling, writing, reading and interactive games.

In 2009, the Sarakasi Trust Hospital Project increased its scope by including an outreach program and it targets children in Day Care Centers for the differently able in Nairobi and Maai Mahiu. At the same time sustainability of our activities at the current hospitals has been maintained.

In addition to the centers mentioned above we have also included Nairobi Children’s Remand Home, which is funded by well wishers.

Outreach centers:
Comfort the Children International Day Care Centre for the Differently Able
Good Shepherd’s Children’s Home
Visionary Mothers and Children Day Care Centre
Nairobi Children Remand Home

Africa Yoga Project

The goal of the Africa Yoga Project is to make a permanent difference in the lives of others by sharing what has so significantly impacted the team’s own lives – Yoga and Service. This core group of assistants will take a stand for bringing yoga and power to all, no matter where or how they live.

This is an initiative that uses the transformational art of yoga to empower communities and change lives. Effective and innovative programs which foster peace, improve physical, emotion and mental well-being, facilitate self-sufficiency and create opportunities to learn and contribute across the communities of East Africa.

Amani Circus

This program was initiated in 2008 as a response to the post election violence earlier in the year. The Circus advocates peace and reconciliation. ‘Amani’ means peace in Kiswahili. The Amani Circus is an educative and engaging circus outreach program in which the process of creating a show together allows the performers, all personally affected by the political crisis in Kenya, to transform their trauma into art and have a platform to share this art with others. The Amani Circus is Sarakasi’s program for artists taking a role as ambassadors for peace and is sponsored and supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy and the Africa Yoga Project.
This project has been adapted into an outreach program at Sarakasi allowing even more children to be affected and involved. For more information see Outreach Program.
