Amani Lazima

Amani LazimaTogether with on the ground stakeholders (grassroots youth initiatives) the goal of Amani Lazima is to approach the youth of urban informal settlements and involve them in activities designed to reach out, create a positive attitude, generate self-esteem, a feeling of ownership and to empower the youth in order to stay away from crime and violence. These activities have been taking place since December 201 each month in a different slum on one set day. Leading up to this monthly activity, a Sarakasi team keeps track of the overall organization and logistics and is the focal point researching and involving the grassroots youth groups. A PR campaign involving media, online blogs and social networks has been launched simultaneously.

Youth will be coached to set up their own initiatives or become member of the local grassroots partners and stay part of the movement. Targeted youth (from all ethnical and cultural backgrounds with an overall emphasis on girls), will include gang youth, youth leaders, youth with disabilities, grassroots community youth groups and so on.

In order to make a positive change and to contribute to advocacy and awareness on issues of peace and anti violence the objectives of this Amani Lazima Project are:

  • To create an anti violence campaign at grassroots level by actively involving vulnerable youth and youth at risk through performing arts, workshops, sports,
  • To launch a PR campaign and involve media to create awareness of Amani Lazima and its goals
  • To create an alliance and feeling of belonging (inclusion instead of exclusion) amongst the slum youth
  • To raise awareness about peaceful co-existence and the need to reduce crime rate
  • To tap into youthful talent
  • To build capacity of the poor within the slums and give them tools for survival
  • To introduce local role models for encouragement and positivity
  • To actively involve women/girls and youth with disabilities in these activities
